Global Warming - It's Real! Nov 18, 2016
If you're staying in Valais such as Verbier or Crans Montana here's a lovely train trip over the mountains to Chamonix and the Montenvers rack railway
Get yourself to Martigny starting point of the modern Mont Blanc Express. This narrow gauge train snakes up to the high village of Finhaut over a 1000 metres above the Trient valley surrounded by spectacular mountain peaks. Change at Vallorcine to the French train to Chamonix. Adjoining is the Montenvers station which only comes to life when quaint train is about to leave. The train is a rack railway and zig zags its way above Chamonix over the mountain to the Hotel de Montenvers a classic stone built hostelry with a small exhibition, the Glaiorium showing the effect of global warming. But there's worse to come - the Mer de Glacé, the local glacier which lapped up to the hotel 100 years is now a good 20 minutes walk away down 400 steps!. You can take a cable car included in the Montenvers train ticket from the hotel to the Glacier itself. When you finally reach the glacier you can explore the Ice tunnel and carvings. Pick a clear day and you'll have an unforgettable experience. In summer you can hike over to the Plan de l'Aiguille and take the cable car back down to Chamonix.
