Itinerary

  • Day 1 Take the morning Eurostar train from the iconic London station of St Pancras to Paris – Gare du Nord look out for views of the ornate Calais Town Hall after the Channel Tunnel.   At Paris connect with the TGV high speed service to Geneva for early evening arrival, the final part of the journey just before Bellegarde crosses the spectacular Cize-Bolozon viaduct over the river Ain. Stay 1 night in Geneva at the 4* Cornavin or 3* Kipling hotel, in the style of the British Raj both situated between the station and lake.
  • Day 2-3 Mid morning train to Montreux where you change for the Golden Pass Panoramic express over the mountains to Zweismmen with new 1st class Belle Epoque carriages (supplement).  The views of Lake Geneva are breath taking as the Panoramic train ascends above Montreux.  You change at Zweisimmen for a pretty run along Lake Thun to Interlaken to arrive late afternoon.  At Interlaken  stay 2 nights at the 4* Metropole or the family run 3* Hotel Sonne both are situated near Interlaken station.  You can use your Swiss rail pass for excursions to Jungfraujoch (supplement) and other nearby mountain resorts of Wengen, Grindelwald or Murren.  Also nearby at Brienz are the powerful cascades of the Giessbach waterfalls reachable by funicular from the lake to the adjoining Grand Hotel.
  • Day 4-5 Take the 2 hour direct journey on the Brunig Panoramic train to Lucerne.  Why not stop for an hour or two at Meiringen where Sherlock Holmes is commemorated?   At Lucerne you stay 2 nights at the the modern 4* Continental Park or traditional 3* Hotel Waldstaetterhof both close to the lake. See the famous wooden Chapel Bridge which displays a series of 17th century paintings recently rebuilt after it was nearly destroyed by fire in 1993.
  • Day 6-7 Enjoy the scenic 4 hour trip over the spectacular Gotthard pass to Locarno on Lake Maggiore. Stay at the 4* Ramada Arcadia is on the Lake just outside the town or at the 3* Dell Angelo in the town center close to the station. The arcades and piazzas of Locarno are overlooked by subtropical gardens of palms, camellias, bougainvillea, cypress, oleanders and magnolias, which flourish on the lakeside promenades and cover the wooded slopes which crowd in above the town center.
  • Day 8 Take the Centovalli railway, one of Switzerland’s most scenic rides. Little, clanky trains traverse the spectacular Centovalli – so named for its ‘hundred’ side valleys – most of the time winding slowly on precarious bridges and viaducts above ravines – sit on the left for the best views. End your lakes of Switzerland train tour by continuing by onward trains from Domodossola in Italy, changing at Geneva and Paris to arrive back in London in the early evening.
